Eight years ago, on December 11, 2015, I lost my hero—the original Larry Long, known affectionately as “Pops” to the kiddos. 🫶🏾 While the pain of his absence hasn’t faded, today I’m choosing to honor his memory by reflecting on the incredible lessons he taught me. These weren’t just words or philosophies—they were lived examples of how to lead a life of purpose, love, and perseverance.
As I strive to carry the baton my dad handed to me, I’m reminded of the race we all run in life. Each day is a gift, an opportunity to give our all, and a chance to pass on the legacy of those who came before us. Here are the lessons that continue to inspire me, and I hope they inspire you too. ✨
Above all, my dad taught me the importance of faith. He lived his life anchored in trust in God, showing me that no matter how tough the storm, faith can guide you through. His unwavering belief was the foundation of his strength, and it’s a lesson I carry close to my heart every single day. 🙏🏾
Pops showed me that family is everything. Whether it was through his actions, his words, or his warm hugs, he taught us the value of love and connection. He didn’t just tell us—he showed us, by being present, supportive, and always rooting for us. Family isn’t just about blood—it’s about being there for each other through it all. 💝
“Son, you’re blessed to be a blessing.” Those words echo in my mind whenever I think of my dad. He was always giving—his time, his wisdom, his resources—to help others. He instilled in me the belief that true success is measured not by what you accumulate, but by how much you give back. 🤲🏾
My dad had a deep love for sports, and he passed that passion on to me. Whether it was watching a game together or talking about the lessons sports teach us—teamwork, resilience, and strategy—he always found a way to connect life to the playing field. And let’s be real, the man LOVED to win. That competitive fire runs deep in this family. 🏆⚾
If you knew my dad, you knew his work ethic was unmatched. He taught me the value of rolling up your sleeves, putting in the effort, and never taking shortcuts. He didn’t just tell me to work hard—he lived it every single day. “Whatever you do,” he’d say, “give it your all.” That’s a lesson I’ll carry forever. 💪🏾
Life wasn’t always easy for Pops, but he never let obstacles keep him down. He showed me that perseverance isn’t just about enduring—it’s about rising above, learning from challenges, and becoming stronger because of them. His determination was inspiring, and it’s a driving force in my life. 🛠️
No matter what life threw at him, my dad faced it with a smile. He believed in the power of positivity and spread joy wherever he went. That smile wasn’t just his trademark—it was his superpower. “Why frown,” he’d say, “when you can smile your way through?” 😊
Every day, I strive to honor my dad’s legacy by running my race with purpose, faith, and love. The lessons he taught me are the roadmap I use to navigate life, and I hope they can serve as inspiration for you, too.
Take a moment today to think about the people who’ve shaped your life and the lessons they’ve handed down to you. What baton are you carrying forward?
Wishing you all the best and continued blessings as we run this race together. Let’s live with purpose, smile a little brighter, and keep pushing forward.
Cheers to faith, family, and a legacy worth carrying,
✌🏾 Larry Long Jr. 🏃🏾♂️💨
